Are You Required To Play Overwatch 1 Before Playing Overwatch 2?

1 years ago By AI Smith

Overwatch fans, both veterans and newcomers, have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Overwatch 2. With its announcement by Blizzard Entertainment and the subsequent years of anticipation, questions have arisen about whether players need to have experienced Overwatch 1 before venturing into the world of its highly anticipated successor, Overwatch 2. Let’s delve into this query and explore whether Overwatch 1 is a prerequisite for playing Overwatch 2.

Overwatch 2 as a Standalone Experience

The short answer is no; you do not need to have played Overwatch 1 before diving into Overwatch 2. Blizzard Entertainment has designed Overwatch 2 to be a standalone experience, welcoming both veterans of the original game and newcomers both.

Key Details for Overwatch 2

Here are some key details to consider as you embark on your Overwatch 2 adventure:

Free-to-Play with Mobile Phone Number Linkage: Overwatch 2 is available to players without any upfront cost. However, Blizzard has implemented a requirement for players to link a valid mobile phone number to their accounts for added security. It’s worth noting that this phone number linkage is expected to become unnecessary for most players after October 7, simplifying the onboarding process.

No Purchase Necessary: Acquiring the Overwatch 2 Watchpoint Pack is not a prerequisite for accessing and enjoying the core features of the game.

Platform Availability: Overwatch 2 is accessible on a variety of gaming platforms, including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Nintendo Switch. This wide range of platforms ensures that players can join the action on their preferred device.

Cross-Play and Cross-Progression: Overwatch 2 boasts cross-play and cross-progression functionalities across all platforms. This means that players can merge their accounts from different platforms, granting them access to all their skins and in-game items, regardless of where those items were initially obtained.

Inclusivity for Overwatch 1 Players: If you’ve been a dedicated Overwatch 1 player, you’ll be delighted to know that all the skins, voice lines, and cosmetic items you’ve unlocked in the original game will carry over to Overwatch 2. Additionally, you’ll have immediate access to the new Support hero, Kiriko.

Season 1 Battle Pass: New players who opt for the premium Season 1 Battle Pass will also enjoy immediate access to Kiriko. Players following the free Season 1 Battle Pass path will need to reach level 55 to unlock this intriguing hero. The premium Battle Pass can be purchased for 1,000 Overwatch Coins, equivalent to $10.

Hero Accessibility: All players who log in during Season 1 of Overwatch 2 will automatically unlock Sojourn and Junker Queen. For new players, acquiring all Overwatch 1 heroes will typically require approximately 100 games.

Competitive Play: Overwatch 1 veterans can jump into Competitive Play right away, as long as they achieved level 25 in the original game. Newcomers will need to win 50 Quick Play matches before they can engage in ranked play.

The Seamless Transition to Overwatch 2

As Overwatch 2 finally becomes a reality, Blizzard has ensured that the transition from Overwatch 1 to the sequel is as seamless as possible. Whether you’re a seasoned Overwatch veteran or a newcomer ready to experience the excitement of Overwatch 2, the game welcomes all to explore its ever-evolving universe of heroes, epic battles, and thrilling gameplay.

With Overwatch 2’s release, Blizzard is committed to providing an inclusive experience that caters to both loyal fans of the original title and those embarking on their first journey through the Overwatch universe. So, whether you’re an old hand or a fresh recruit, Overwatch 2 awaits you with open arms, promising exciting adventures and unforgettable battles.

As the Overwatch 2 community grows and evolves, stay tuned for the latest developments and updates on this highly anticipated game.
